MMA V Boxing is MMA a Real Sport?

Posted on 25th Oct 2009 @ 8:50 PM

First of all, what is the definition of an athlete? An athlete is a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, strength , and mental ability in an athletic activity. Who’s a better athlete a mixed martial artist or boxer? This is a tough question just because they are two completely different sports. It’s like asking who’s better, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Ali, or Babe Ruth? In my opinion, I believe that a mixed martial artist is a better athlete.

My reasoning for this is that mixed martial artists have to train in many different styles of fighting, including boxing. There is just far more styles to learn, such as judo, kick boxing, kung-fu, nin-jitsu, muay thai, tae kwon do, and the list goes on. The more knowledgeable and well-rounded fighter you are in the different martial arts, the better fighter you will be in MMA. That’s why it is called “mixed martial arts.” Boxing doesn’t include on-the-ground techniques, kicks, and grappling. It’s all fists (with thicker gloves than MMA), standing, above the belt fighting. Don’t get me wrong, I love boxing. It too, includes well rounded athletes, but it seems to me it’s mostly all about Endurance, especially boxing today. MMA.jpg

Where did all the great fights go with the pure knockouts, by people like Ali and Tyson in his prime? Who wants to see a winner decided by judges? No one. That rarely happens in MMA. People want to see a knockout or a tap out with an undisputable winner. I personally know a street fighter turned boxer turned MMA fighter. He was looking for more of a challenge. He fights locally and recently had his first fight in MMA over in the US and said the training is far more intense and he has learned a lot more. His record in boxing is 35-1 and MMA is 1-0. Look him up on you tube “Chris Lozano MMA,” he’s going to blow up in a few years I guarantee it.

Anyways he is the perfect example of why a mixed martial artist is a better athlete, it's just harder. You’ll never see a professional boxer get in the cage with a mixed martial artist or a MMA go 12 rounds in the ring with a boxer. In the end, I still believe that a mixed martial artist is the better athlete given the two completely different sports. MMA is just more physical and there is so much more you can do and learn.

You have to be crazy if you think mixed martial arts isn’t a “REAL” sport. It’s been around for centuries and it is just recently becoming extremely popular these past few years. It’s one of the fastest growing sports around. If MMA isn’t considered a sport I don’t think nothing should be. MMA may be the most physically demanding sport around.

MMA fighters have to be focused or they'll get hurt. It’s more physical than boxing, football, Rugby, and tennis so why shouldn’t it be considered a real sport? It requires strength, speed, stamina, and supplements for focus. A sport is an athletic activity requiring skill and/or physical prowess of a competitive nature. MMA is that and so much more. I am actually shocked that MMA isn’t considered a “REAL” sport to some people. I had no idea that people thought that. I would like one of them to explain to me why they don’t believe MMA is a real sport because that blows my mind and they obviously have no idea what it takes both mentaly & physicaly to become an MMA athlete.
