In short, Beta-Alanine works by boosting the synthesis of carnosine inside your muscle cell (intracellular). Carnosine which is comprised of beta-alanine and histidine is present in both type 1 and type 2 muscle fibres. However it’s concentration is significantly higher in type 2 fibres which are primarily engaged for high intensity strength workouts and are the most vital for developing new muscle growth.

Carnosine acts as an intracellular buffer, which means it helps stabilize muscular pH by soaking up hydrogen ions (H+) that are released at an accelerated rate during exercise. By supplementing with Beta-Alanine you can significantly increase carnosine stores which in turn can increase your “buffering capacity” allowing you to increase strength and power.

Researchers have shown that when supplementing with beta-alanine for 4 weeks, carnosine concentration levels can increase by 42-65%. Longer beta-alanine studies (10-12 weeks), show that carnosine concentrations can increase up to 80%.

The larger the increase in buffering capacity the greater the increase in strength, lean body mass, power and muscular endurance gains.

Decreasing cellular fatigue is an additional strength of beta-alanine. A recent study demonstrates that beta-alanine outperformed creatine in decreasing cellular fatigue, giving it another advantage over the most researched strength supplement.

Research has shown that you can take an amount between 3.2 grams and 6.4 grams per day to significantly boost carnosine levels and improve performance. The most recent research, now using 4-5 grams a day, is showing comparable carnosine concentration and performance improvements to those using 6.4g daily.

The key performance window for carnosine occurs around 3-4 weeks. Although individuals have experience noticeable effects in just two weeks, as carnosine stores increase over time, the link appears to be a direct increase in results.
